Trafalgar Hoist Project

This project started with a simple idea: to hoist the historic signal “Engage More Closely” from the mizzen mast of HMS Victory, Lord Nelson’s flagship at Trafalgar. As I dug deeper into the history and spoke with the ship’s current First Lieutenant, I learned that the signal flags used onboard—especially those flown on Trafalgar Day—are showing their age and need replacing.

That’s when I decided to do something more meaningful.

I would like to arranged for a new set of 1805 signal flags to be made, spelling out the legendary message:
“ENGLAND EXPECTS THAT EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY”

These flags will be custom-made to match the originals and donated to HMS Victory.

I’m reaching out to fellow history lovers, naval enthusiasts, and anyone who values tradition to help make this happen. Every contribution will go directly toward the cost of the flags, and all supporters will be acknowledged when the set is presented to the ship.

Please visit and share the below link to help support this project. Please consider donating any amount small or large or if you want to you can donate the cost of a flag.

Each flag will Size 10 : 84"x60" - 213cm x 152cm made from 155gsm MoD approved woven polyester finished with Inglefield clips

The total cost for the 32 flags will be £2650.

The ship is currently undergoing a major restoration or Great Repair, which involves extensive work across the entire vessel. This vital effort is aimed at ensuring HMS Victory can endure for another 260 years. If all goes to plan, we hope to see her fully re-rigged within the next couple of years restoring her to the magnificent form she once displayed, as seen below.
